Unlike a traditional online course, the ACTHIV Virtual Clinical Preceptorship combines expert mentorship, real-world patient cases, and collaborative discussion in a highly interactive small-group learning experience designed to help participants build HIV expertise and clinical confidence.
Over five live online sessions, participants learn alongside experienced HIV clinicians and peers who are also building HIV expertise. Together, they discuss real-world patient cases, current guidelines, and practical approaches to caring for people living with or at risk for HIV.
Is This Program Right for You?
The program is designed for specialist and primary care physicians, nurse practitioners, physician associates/assistants, pharmacists, nurses, case managers/social workers, and other members of the HIV care team who are:
- Newer to HIV care (approximately two years or less caring for people with or at risk for HIV)
- Primary care clinicians expanding their role in HIV prevention and care
- Lower-volume HIV providers seeking to build confidence and expertise

Why Participate?
The ACTHIV Institute developed this program to strengthen the frontline HIV care workforce through practical, evidence-based education in a highly interactive small-group setting.

Learning Experience
Participants meet live online for five 90-minute sessions over six weeks.
Each 90-minute session combines:
- Brief clinical updates
- Interactive case discussions
- Faculty-led discussion and Q&A
- Collaborative learning with peers
- Practical strategies participants can immediately apply in practice

September 29 – November 3, 2026

Curriculum
Week 1 – Foundations of HIV Care (Tues, Sept 29)
Introductions, discussion of learner needs, and review of foundational concepts in HIV treatment and care.
Week 2 – HIV Resistance Testing and the Treatment-Experienced Patient (Tues, Oct 6)
Interpreting resistance testing and applying results to clinical decision-making.
Week 3 – HIV Prevention, Sexual Health, and Risk Assessment (Tues, Oct 13)
Taking a sexual history, assessing HIV and STI risk, counseling, testing, and prevention strategies.
No session during IDWeek.
Week 4 – Team-Based HIV Primary Care (Tues, Oct 27)
The roles of different members of the HIV care team and strategies for delivering coordinated, patient-centered care.
Week 5 – Bringing It All Together (Tues, Nov 3)
Applying what you’ve learned through case discussion while addressing questions and challenges participants encounter in their own practice.
Participation Expectations
There are no fees to participate in this learning experience.
Accepted participants will be asked to:
- Complete selected ACTHIV online educational activities and assigned readings before sessions.
- Attend and actively participate in all five virtual sessions
- Complete a post-program assessment
- Participate in a brief follow-up interview approximately 60 days after the program
CME/CE Credit
Participants who successfully complete this free program may earn 7.5 hours of CME/CNE/CPE credit.

American Academy of CME, Inc., designates this live activity for a maximum of 7.5 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

American Academy of CME, Inc., designates this educational activity for 7.5 ANCC contact hours.
California: Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number CEP16993 for 7.5 contact hours.
Physician Assistants:
American Academy of CME, Inc. has been authorized by the American Academy of PAs (AAPA) to award AAPA Category 1 CME credit for activities planned in accordance with AAPA CME Criteria. This activity is designated for 7.5 AAPA Category 1 CME credits. PAs should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation.
Pharmacists:
This activity provides 7.5 ACPE contact hours (0.75 CEUs) of continuing education credit.
